State Rep. Mark McCullough's statements against public and subsidized health care are morally reprehensible and outdated. Our nation moved past this war on women nearly 100 years ago. Disgustingly, however, McCullough does not object to health care and birth control for women because its advocates were racist, as was the case of many individuals who opposed birth-control activist Margaret Sanger's arguments for eugenics, but because he himself seeks to limit the rights of women, the poor and people of color.
Worse yet, rather than owning his racism and sexism, McCullough passes it off as a religious and moral decision - a stance that should play no part in politics. If McCullough continues to wage this war, he should at least admit he acts out of racism, not misguided and false morality.
