It seems more and more likely that Oral Roberts women’s head basketball coach Jerry Finbeiner will become the new women’s head coach at Utah State University.
Finkbeiner could not be reached for comment Wednesday, but sources said he notified his players, assistants and ORU athletic director Mike Carter of his decision, and was flying to Logan, Utah, later in the day.
Other media outlets and sources were reporting it as a done deal.
Utah State has scheduled a noon Thursday press conference to announce a new head coach, according to Doug Hoffman, the school’s athletic media relations director.
Carter could not be reached for comment.
On Tuesday, a twitter account called @SaltLakeMetro identified Finkbeiner as one of three finalists for the job, along with Idaho State women's head coach Seton Sobolewski and Nebraska women's associate head coach Sunny Smallwood.
Finkbeiner has guided the ORU program for 16 seasons, going 273-208 with five NCAA Tournament appearances.
The Golden Eagles finished 20-11 in 2011-12, winning 20 or more games for the third straight year and sixth time in Finkbeiner's tenure. They also participated in the WNIT for the third straight year.
Finkbeiner was previously mentioned as a candidate for the job at the University of North Texas. On April 16, former Wake Forest head coach Mike Petersen was introduced as the Mean Green's new women's coach.
