Hertz Global Holdings Inc., the New Jersey company that made two hostile takeover bids in the last two years for Tulsa-based Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc., is opening 125 rental car locations in 33 states, including one new site in Oklahoma, company executives said Tuesday.
Hertz executives said the new store openings are part of a company strategy to accelerate expansion in the off-airport, neighborhood car rental market servicing the replacement, leisure and business customers.
Hertz executives said the new rental car facilities are located from Arizona to Connecticut and from Washington to Florida.
The new locations include stores in Idabel, Okla., Fort Worth and Sherman, Texas, two in St. Louis, one in Colorado, and one in Kansas, company officials said.
Besides the new Idabel store, Hertz operates 47 rental car locations in Oklahoma, including 13 stores in Tulsa, eight in Oklahoma City and three in Bartlesville, company officials said.
Hertz's initiative follows by a week Dollar Thrifty's announcement it opened 24 new franchise rental car locations around the world in the first quarter.
Dollar Thrifty's new franchise locations include seven U.S. locations and 17 international franchise locations, company executives said.
The new Dollar Thrifty domestic franchise locations are in-terminal airport locations in Midland, Texas, Montgomery, Ala., and Fort Wayne, Ind., and one local market location in Palmdale, Calif.
Dollar Thrifty, the fourth largest U.S. rental car company, has 5,900 employees worldwide and 700 in Tulsa.
Hertz, with 23,000 employees worldwide, is the nation's second largest rental car operator.
Dollar Thrifty shares closed Tuesday at $79.94, up 49 cents.
Hertz shares rose 14 cents, closing at $14.56.
