A grocer entering Tulsa is ready to start hiring 80 to 90 people and find local food vendors to fill its shelves.

The Fresh Market is hosting a job fair Tuesday at the Hilton Tulsa Southern Hills hotel, where it will be looking for personnel ranging from assistant managers and cashiers to meat cutters and candy specialists.

The Greensboro, N.C.-based company has not set an opening date for the store, only identifying this summer as its target, spokeswoman Lara Bronstein said.

The Fresh Market chain identifies itself as a specialty grocer that emphasizes high-quality products. Its "gourmet" stores play classic music, feature soft lighting and try to create an "intimate" experience for customers, Bronstein said via email.

The grocer is setting up in a 24,000-square-foot former Borders books and music store at 81st Street and Yale Avenue. It's spending about $1.25 million on renovations, according to city building records.

The Borders Group Inc. location closed in April 2011, two months after the struggling chain filed for bankruptcy protection. It eventually folded.

Also Tuesday, The Fresh Market plans to host a "local vendor pitch day" as it looks for area suppliers.

"As we continue to grow our company throughout the United States, we are also growing our local programs, increasing our focus on finding fantastic local products," said a statement from Marc Jones, the company's senior vice president of marketing and merchandising.

The grocer has not named a time or location for the vendor event but is asking interested parties to register by emailing in advance to buylocal@thefreshmarket.com, where more information is also available.
