Before throwing his first pass for the Cleveland Browns, Brandon Weeden will be a patriot - or at least a Patriot Cup participant.
Weeden, the former Oklahoma State quarterback who was taken 22nd overall in the 2012 NFL draft, is among celebrity players who have indicated they will compete in the Patriot Cup, a pro-am golf event scheduled May 28 at The Patriot Golf Club in Owasso.
Weeden and actor Craig T. Nelson (best known for playing the lead role in the TV series "Coach") are among new additions to the Patriot Cup field.
The Patriot Cup is a competition that pairs a pro golfer or celebrity with an active or non-active military golfer. Proceeds from the Memorial Day event will benefit the Owasso-based Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides educational scholarships to spouses and dependents of soldiers killed or disabled while defending the country.
Weeden is a golf enthusiast who walked on to the OSU golf team last spring, though he never played a competitive round for the Cowboys.
Three weeks before being drafted, Weeden attended the Masters and tweeted that he couldn't wait to follow OSU alums Rickie Fowler, Scott Verplank, Bo Van Pelt, Charles Howell III and Hunter Mahan.
Van Pelt, Mahan and Fowler are among PGA Tour players who will join Weeden as Patriot Cup participants.
Champions Tour players include Corey Pavin, Craig Stadler, Loren Roberts, Peter Jacobsen, Tom Lehman and Tom Pernice, Jr.
Celebrity golfers include singer Vince Gill and members of the band Rascal Flatts.
Dan Rooney, who founded Patriot Golf Club and the Folds of Honor Foundation, said last month he hopes to sell 5,000 tickets to the Patriot Cup.
"The Patriot Cup has emerged as one of the leading pro-am events in the country," Rooney said in a press release.
"By pairing these top-tier golfers and celebrities with members of the military, the Patriot Cup is an incredible celebration of God, country and the game. We invite all golf fans and military to come out, enjoy some great golf and help us raise funds for the families of our heroes."
