Thomas L. Ashcraft, M.D., 85, of Tulsa, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012. He was born March 13, 1927 in Stuttgart, AR, son of the late Walker T. and Frances (Gunnell) Ashcraft of England, AR. He graduated from England High School in 1943. He was a veteran of WWII in the US Army ETO, serving in Bremen, Germany. Dr. Ashcraft graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1949 and the University of Arkansas College of Medicine in 1953. After a brief time in Arkansas as a country doc, he went to Chicago and received his Anesthesia residency from Rush Medical School. While in Chicago, he was on staff at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital, Cook County Hospital and served as President of the Midwest Anesthesia Society. After the “big snow” of 1967, Dr. Ashcraft moved to Tulsa and became Chief of Anesthesia at Doctors’ Hospital. Fondly known as Dr. A, he was the last surviving member of the Board of Trustees of Doctors’ Hospital which built the Doctors’ Medical Arts Building. He received a Fellowship in Anesthesiology and was a Diplomat of the American Pain Management Association. Dr. Ashcraft practiced medicine for almost 60 years, ending his career as a specialist in Pain Management. He served as President of the Oklahoma Society of Anesthesiologists, was a member of OU Medical School Board of Admissions, the Illinois Medical Society, Tulsa County Medical Society, Oklahoma State Medical Association and American Medical Association. For many years, Dr. Ashcraft served as Doctor of the Day for the Oklahoma State Legislature. Dr. Ashcraft was a member of First United Methodist Church and appointed a lifetime member of the Administrative Board. He was actively involved in the Simon Estes Education Foundation which provides college scholarships for students exhibiting scholastic excellence and financial need. He was a member of the Tulsa Opera Board of Directors and Rotary Club of Tulsa. Dr. Ashcraft is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carole Anne Ashcraft; daughters, Caroline Elizabeth Wall and Catherine Anne Wall of Tulsa; granddaughter, Karisa Thea Anne Semon at Univ. of TX, Austin; brother, Rev. Charles G. & wife Rosalie H. Ashcraft of Springdale, AR; nephews, Charles Gary Ashcraft II of Springdale, AR, Thomas Mark Ashcraft of Lawrence, KS; sister in law, Betty Gale of Bella Vista, AR. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Wed. May 9th at Freeman Harris Funeral Home, 3333 E 41 ST, Tulsa. Funeral Services are 2 pm Thurs. May 10th at First United Methodist Church 1115 S Boulder, Tulsa; military interment 4 pm Fri. May 11th Bella Vista, AR Cemetery.
