Letter to the Editor: Insufficient data

Does human activity result in significant
global warming? Few, if any,
know the answer. However, many have
an opinion about this very complex issue.
Unfortunately, the opinions are not
generated by reasoned thought but are
fashioned by political party affiliation.
In addition, the point men in this contentious
controversy (Albert Gore and
James Inhofe) are both career politicians
void of scientific credentials.
While an engineering student, we often
were admonished by mathematics
and science professors regarding conclusions
and judgments when having
insufficient data. The period of Earth’s
temperature cycle may extend many
thousand years. Therefore, the temperature
record of a decade, century or
possibly a millennium is a non sequitur
— insufficient data to define a temperature
It is arrogant to believe we have the
ability to assure the comfort of the polar
bear while Mother Nature has her
hand on the thermostat.
Prior to the end of the current century,
carbon fuels will not be the primary
source of energy and the internal combustion
engine will be an exhibit in the
