Fire crews battled a blaze Wednesday that spread through a storage facility in east Tulsa, damaging multiple units.

Firefighters were called about 2 p.m. to SecurCare Self Storage, 11122 E. 61st St., said Tim Smallwood, a spokesman for the Tulsa Fire Department. Heavy smoke was seen coming from several units when firefighters arrived.

As crews entered one of the smoking units, the introduction of more air caused the fire to spread through the full units, Smallwood said.

“We went in to put it out, but the fire just kept going,” Smallwood said.

Five units were heavily damaged, and at least 15 received some damage, Smallwood said.

Officials weren’t sure what caused the fire, but Smallwood said, “It’s odd for something to combust by itself.” Fire and investigators were on the scene.

Smallwood said with temperatures approaching 90 degrees, extra firefighters were brought in to help fight the fire. No one was injured.
