The Tulsa school board is seeking applicants to represent the areas around Booker T. Washington and Rogers high schools.
The resignation of District 2 board member Oma Jean Copeland earlier this month because of health problems left the board with 60 days to appoint someone to serve out the remaining seven months of her term or to call a special election to fill the post.
"We've got a good school board right now. Hopefully, we will find someone who shares Ms. Copeland's passions for serving the children of Tulsa," said board President Gary Percefull.
The application is available online to be downloaded or printed. The deadline to apply is 3:30 p.m. June 25.
Each applicant must have lived in District 2 for at least six months, be a registered voter and have earned a high school diploma or equivalency certificate.
Schools in District 2 are Burroughs, Kendall-Whittier, McKinley, Mitchell, Owen, Sequoyah and Springdale elementary schools; Carver and Cleveland middle schools; Booker T. Washington High School and Rogers Early College Junior High and High School.
For more information about applying for the District 2 office, call board clerk Peggy Young at 918-746-6302.
After serving on the board for more than seven years, Copeland resigned this month because of ongoing health issues. A celebration of her service to the board is planned for 4 p.m. June 23 at the Clark-Asberry Bed and Breakfast, 6404 N. Osage Drive.
Next superintendentis topic of meeting
The Tulsa school board has set a special meeting for 5:30 p.m. Monday to discuss identifying a successor for Superintendent Keith Ballard, who is leaving when his contract expires June 30, 2013. The agenda calls for discussion by the board in a closed-door, executive session. A special meeting with the same agenda was held in late May, and board President Gary Percefull called it a "routine step" in finding the district's next superintendent.
