Joining a growing list of mobile service providers, Cricket Communications dealers in the Tulsa area are now selling the popular Apple iPhone 4S phones in a no-contract format.

The company started offering the phones Friday with plans starting at $55 a month without a contract.

The phones will cost consumers a steeper up-front fee, with the 16-gigabyte model selling for $499 and the older iPhone 4 selling for $399.

The monthly fee covers unlimited calling and texting, and 2.5 gigabytes of monthly data usage.

The phones can be bought online or at local Cricket Communications stores.

Other pre-paid, no-contract providers such as Virgin Mobile USA, a Sprint subsidiary, will start offering the iPhone at the end of June.

Cricket is a unit of Leap Wireless.
