Letter to the Editor: We’re stronger?

The Taliban have threatened to
stop polio vaccinations of children
in the parts of Pakistan that they
control unless the U.S. stops its
drone attacks. The Taliban are despicable
beyond description. But
what of the parents who live in Pakistan,
who meekly stand by and allow
the rabid beliefs of others to expose
their kids to great harm? What
can you say of parents in Pakistan
who allow these political bullies to
threaten their kids’ health and future
happiness?
This would never happen in
America. We would never allow political
fanatics to threaten our kids’
health, or risk our children’s financial
future for someone else’s political
ideology.
Our forefathers fought at Bunker
Hill; they died at Pearl Harbor and
Normandy, defending us against political
tyranny.
We are made of stronger stuff
than the Pakistani peasants are. We
would never allow politicians, to
place our kids’ health in harm’s way
by canceling their insurance or cutting
women’s health and prenatal
programs, just to help them get reelected.
We would never subject our
children to a second-rate education,
which will impact their future earning
power, because some politician
took an oath to never raise taxes. We
are made of sterner stuff, we fight,
we stick up for our kids. We call out
political hucksters and opportunists
when their grandstanding hurts our
kids. We are Americans.
