Watch video preview of PBS’ “Mariachi High.”
Prepare to laugh, cry, compete and curtsey to the queen of England this weekend on television.
He’s baaaack
Bolt the doors and hide
your tigers, Charlie Sheen
is back in the new comedy
“Anger Management” debuting
at 8 p.m. Thursday on FX,
cable 35.
This time, Sheen, who
famously (and very publicly)
trashed his career as star of
CBS’ “Two and a Half Men”
two years ago, is playing a
former ball player who overcomes
his own anger problems
by becoming a therapist.
Also on FX, the dark
comedy “Louie” returns with
star comedian Louis C.K.
as a man who is challenged
by daily ordeals — all drawn
from his life, his stand-up
routines and a scripted story.
“Louie” kicks off its third
season at 8:30 p.m. Thursday
on cable 35.
Greatest show on Earth
He may look like the Earl
of Grantham from “Downton
Abbey,” but this time Hugh
Bonneville is playing part
of a team who will, by hook
or by daintily crooked little
finger, make the London
Olympics happen in “Twenty
Twelve.”
This BBCA series, airing
with back-to-back episodes
at 8 p.m. Thursday, follows
those VIPs who must deal
with vital topics like how
to phase traffic lights, deal
with protests involving horse
dung, cope with athletes
with no personalities, find
lost non-English speaking
tourists and which celebrities
should be asked to carry
the torch.
The crack team is responsible
for all the laughs this
week … and delivering the
greatest show on Earth this
summer. The series continues
in its regular time slot
of 11 p.m. Saturdays as part
of the “Ministry of Laughs”
comedy block on cable 176.
Olympic trials continue
NBC is gearing up for the
Olympics on July 27, but in
the meantime the network
is airing all sorts of Olympic
trials to see who makes each
U.S. team.
At 7 p.m. Friday, it’s swimming
trials, followed at 8
p.m. by the popular women’s
gymnastic competition.
Saturday’s coverage includes
track & field plus more
swimming and the women’s
gymnastics finals on Sunday.
All on channel 2, cable 9.
Mariachi musica!
Marachi is the music of
Mexico made with violins,
trumpets and guitars. And
it’s also the subject of the
documentary “Mariachi
High,” airing at 9 p.m. Friday
on channel 11.
The subtitled show follows
a group of talented teenagers
vying for a spot in the
school’s championship mariachi
band in the small town
of Zapata, Texas. From there,
the cameras follow these
inspiring students as they
come of age through fierce
contests.
It’s a story of kids with a
drive to excel and the music
that inspires and surprises.
God save the queen
PBS delves into the life
of the British monarchy
with its new series “Queen
& Country” premiering at 7
p.m. Sunday and continuing
through July 22 on channel
11.
Journalist Sir Trevor Mc-
Donald takes viewers along
as he explores the customs
and the site of royal history.
It’s part of the PBS summer
of Brit series in celebration
of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond
Jubilee.
