Except for the Medicaid forfeiture provision, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the health-care law 5-4. The vote actually was 4-4-1. Chief Justice John Roberts followed the law and the other justices voted along party lines.

The health-care mandate plan was initially drafted by the Heritage Institute, a conservative think tank, as an alternative to government takeover of health-care insurance. The Democrats wanted public insurance and tried to include a public option in the health-care law similar to Medicare that would compete with private insurance. The effort failed and the Republicans successfully kept health-care insurance in the hands of private insurance companies.

The Republican health-care mandate plan is now the law of the land, so why are Republicans so upset about it? It was their idea.
