A 3-year-old Tulsa girl accidentally shot herself in the leg with her parents’ handgun Tuesday night, police said.

The child had gone into her parents’ bedroom in the 8900 block of East Marshall Street by herself before the shooting occurred just before 10 p.m., police said. They did not know immediately whether the gun had been secured.

The girl shot herself in the upper thigh and was in serious condition, but the wound didn’t appear to be life-threatening, Capt. Karen Tipler said.

Police were still investigating late Tuesday, and the family’s names were not released.

Tipler said that "the parents have definitely learned a lesson about loaded firearms in the house."
