West tops East in All-State football game

The story: The West gathered four first-half turnovers, scored touchdowns after three of them and led almost from start to finish in a 33-19 win over the East in the 75th All-State game before about 5,500 spectators Friday night in Union-Tuttle Stadium.

Putnam City's Casey Curtis scored two touchdowns and tallied a game-high 70 rushing yards on 11 carries. Yukon quarterback Corben Jones scored on a 1-yard run and threw 39 yards to Enid's Mitchell Foote to set up another score.

The East's top performer was Metro Christian quarterback Andrew Hearon. He had a 65-yard touchdown pass to Bristow's Lexus Jackson and totaled 153 passing yards.

Trailing 26-7 at halftime, the East rallied in the fourth quarter, pulling to within 26-19 on a 1-yard run by Catoosa's Cole Scheulen with 1:37 left.

But the West recovered the onside kick and was in the process of running out the clock when the East called timeout with 10 seconds left. On the next play, Curtis raced 24 yards for the final score.

Top performers: Booker T. Washington kicker Tom Carwile had a 36-yard field goal, two extra points and punts of 68, 52 and 36 yards. ... The West had three first-half pass interceptions, two by El Reno's Rashaad Copeland and another by Edmond Santa Fe's Josh Crouch. ... Catoosa's Scheulen led the East in rushing with 42 yards and also had three pass receptions for 55 yards.

Noteworthy: The West won for the third straight year, pushing its series lead to 19-11-2. The first 43 All-State games used a North-South format. ... Anadarko's Kent Jackson was named football coach of the year by the Oklahoma Coaches Association.
