LONDON — China's men's gymnastics team won its second consecutive Olympic title and third in four games Monday, silencing critics who wrote the team off after a dismal performance in qualifying.
Its score of 275.997 points was more than four points ahead of Britain, which celebrated its first team medal in a century as if it had won the gold.
Ukraine was third while Japan was a shocking fourth, losing a medal of any color when three-time world champion Kohei Uchimura fell off pommel horse in the squad's last routine.
The Americans, who had such great hopes for their first Olympic title since 1984 after finishing first in qualifying, lost a medal of any color with two falls on their second event and finished fifth.
