The cliché is that "the world is going to hell in a hand basket." The truth is we're not going anywhere. We are building hell right here on Earth - maybe for real.
Neither presidential candidate is proposing any concrete solutions. They are fearlessly exercising caution.
In a vision still softly creeping, I may have found a possible solution. We need a third party. I call it the Grown-up Party.
We could take for our platform some of the suggestions recently made by (former Clinton administration Secretary of Labor) Robert Reich. The president could recreate the WPA. This was a jobs program created during the Great Depression. The WPA hired hundreds of thousands of jobless Americans to rebuild the nation's infrastructure.
Capitalism is pushing us down a road toward fires, floods and famine. We can create something along the lines of the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps to fight these scourges.
Toddlers on the right will be furious at the prospect of new taxes, but a grown-up has to do what a grown-up has to do. What we have to do is to enact the Robin Hood Tax, a tax of less than 1/2 percent on Wall Street transactions. See the video at http://robinhoodtax.org.
For our presidential candidate, I propose Al Gore. Mother Nature has shown us that Al Gore is well grounded in reality, and he's already been elected once.
