Correction: Sources incorrectly reported homicide victim Roy Varnell’s age and information about his grandchildren. This story has been corrected.

DRUMRIGHT — A Creek County man was fatally shot Wednesday at his home near Happy Corner.

Roy Varnell’s 12-year-old grandchild contacted authorities after Varnell, who family members said was 64, was shot in the head around 10 a.m. near Oklahoma 33 and 433rd West Avenue, south of Olive, Creek County Undersheriff John Davis said.

Varnell’s grandchildren were with him when he was shot. They were not injured, Davis said. Varnell's family said the grandchildren home with him at the time were a 12-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl.

Varnell is the father of a Pawnee County sheriff’s deputy, Davis said.

The investigation was still in its early stages late Wednesday, and a possible motive had not been established. The Sheriff’s Office has requested assistance from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Davis said detectives were conducting interviews and “slowly developing information.”

Day-care centers in the area were voluntarily locked down as a precaution, but Davis did not think area residents were in immediate danger.
