Position update: Wide receivers

Among the players trying to fill the void of Justin Blackmon is senior Isaiah Anderson, who is among the fastest players on the team, with a 4.39 time in the 40.

"Because he's got such great speed, guys have to get off him or he'll run right by him," coach Mike Gundy said.

Fellow senior Tracy Moore is the team's No. 1 receiver heading into the fall while Anderson and spring sensation Charlie Moore will likely be the other primary deep targets.

News and notes

No rave reviews: After the team's first practice in full pads, coach Mike Gundy said the workout was good but not great.

"We need to be tougher mentally and get more out of practice than we did," he said. "We got some things accomplished.

"It wasn't bad. We've got to move faster. Our tempo was just average."

Gundy said he expects sharper practices for the rest of this week in preparation for the team's scrimmage Saturday.

"Once we get into the eighth or ninth or 10th practice or so, our guys ought to be up and rolling," he said. "They're practicing well, but they need to practice much better in order to play and start out at such a high level like where we finished last season."

Gundy reacts to Weeden news: On Monday, former Cowboy Brandon Weeden was named the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

"I kind of guessed that if they took him in the first round and they were going to put that kind of money in him that they were going to put him out there and start him," Gundy said. "I'm sure he's handled the situation very well, being there on time and his leadership skills and has proven to them that he gives them the best chance to win games.

"I hope things work out well for him. I know we have a lot of confidence in his ability."

Opponent watch: West Virginia

The Mountaineers have at least 10 freshmen who will play this season, coach Dana Holgorsen told the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail. About 30 freshmen are taking reps in practice, including two on the offensive line. All five freshman wideouts could contribute to a young receiving corps, the paper reported.
