Man charged in Vian shooting pleads not guilty

VIAN — A man accused in the fatal shooting of a Sequoyah County man has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.
Prosecutors said the July 28 shooting of Stanley Ross was accidental but filed charges against James Moffett because he allegedly engaged in conduct that caused an immediate and extremely high risk of death to another.
Court records said Moffett and Ross were at a gathering near Vian where people were drinking beer and firing guns at clay targets. Prosecutors claim that Moffett was handling the gun recklessly when Ross was fatally shot.
Prosecutors said there was no indication that the shooting was premeditated.
The Southwest Times Record reports that Moffett entered his plea Wednesday and is due in court Aug. 22. Court records don't list an attorney for Moffett.
