Miriam Louise White Easter, affectionately known as “Memo”, passed away on July 30, 2012. She was 96 years old. One of 5 children born to Rev. Alvin F., and Stella White, Miriam was born in South Whitley, Indiana. Her father, a Methodist minister, soon joined the Oklahoma conference where he and his family were often assigned to new churches every 4 years thus moving the family to many different towns throughout Oklahoma. Music was a big part of Miriam’s life. She and her sisters, Esther Anderson and Lois Dudley formed the White Trio and sang for churches and with local bands all over Oklahoma. Miriam played the piano, the cello and had great interest in playing the mandolin and ukelin, loving to tell the history of each instrument. Miriam had a fascination with genealogy and would research late into the night assembling volumes of family information; taking great pride in charting her family history. She proved her lineage back to the American Revolution, and became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. As her daughters grew, Miriam became very active with the Tulsa Council of Camp Fire Girls, and wore her very own Camp Fire vest proudly; turning her own beads just as the girls in her group did. She and her husband Wally Easter belonged to the Friendly Couples Class at Boston Avenue Methodist Church, claiming membership in the class since 1958. Graduating from Northwestern State Teachers’ College in Alva, Oklahoma, Miriam taught school for many years, and later was an active substitute teacher for elementary schools in the Tulsa Public School System. Miriam was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, a member of P.E.O. and was an active member of her local garden club. Married to A. Wallace Easter for 51 years until his death in 1997, Miriam is survived by her three daughters and their families; Betty and Jerry Verhalen of Richardson, TX, Donna and Dr. Bill Kennedy of Tulsa, Peggy and Steve Sheppard of Springfield, MO; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and her sister Lois White Dudley of Centerbrook, CT. A resident of Oklahoma Methodist Manor from 2002 to 2011, Miriam will be remembered for founding the Fourth of July Scooter Parade where residents were invited to dress in Red, White and Blue and parade their scooters around the complex to celebrate the holiday. Miriam loved making quilts, and saved fabric from all of her girls’ dresses, to use, in great color schemes for her quilts. Miriam also had a love of reading and working puzzles. Her morning started off working cryptoquotes, cross word puzzles and word games from the daily newspaper, and well into her nineties, she was always ready to work a jig saw puzzle. We celebrate her life, and we will miss her! Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 11, at 10:00 AM in The Rose Chapel of Boston Avenue Methodist Church, 1301 S. Boston, Tulsa, OK 74119. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the National Kidney Foundation, 5429 LBJ Freeway, Dallas, TX 75240. Celebrate Recovery, Southern Hills Baptist Church, 2218 E. 56th Place, Tulsa, OK 74105, or to a charity in which you have a special interest This obituary was published in the Tulsa World on 8/10/2012.
