The opportunity to be an extra in the Meryl Streep-Julia Roberts movie "August: Osage County" arrives Saturday when a casting call will be held in Tulsa.
The open call will take place at the Doubletree Hotel Warren Place, 6110 S. Yale Ave., in the Parkview East ballroom from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, according to casting director Chris Freihofer.
He added that though babies and toddlers are not needed, the production is seeking a variety of people to play extras during filming, which is scheduled to begin Sept. 24 in the Pawhuska and Bartlesville areas.
Freihofer described Saturday's open call as "an opportunity to find, photograph and catalogue all people interested in working in the film in non-speaking roles," and he confirmed that extras will be paid to appear in "August: Osage County."
"We will ask everyone to provide us with contact information and clothing sizes, and we will take everyone's pictures," he said. "The whole process should take less than 10 minutes."
Casting decisions will be made throughout filming, which is scheduled for eight weeks into late November. Those who are chosen to appear as an extra will be called on some occasions with as little as 24 to 48 hours notice before they are needed, Freihofer said.
The filming schedule is slated to run Mondays through Fridays with no weekend filming. The majority of extras would be needed for only one day, and they can plan on being needed for that day's entire shooting schedule of eight hours or more.
"Do not list a day as available unless you can be on set the entire day, and even into the evening," he said.
"August: Osage County" is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play written by Tulsa native Tracy Letts, who has written the screenplay for the film about the dysfunctional Weston family, which gathers at the brood's ancestral Pawhuska residence when a family member disappears.
The play also won five Tony Awards, including best play on Broadway.
Additional cast members include Chris Cooper, Abigail Breslin and Juliette Lewis. George Clooney is among the producers for the Weinstein Co. film, to be directed by John Wells, the longtime producer of "ER" and "The West Wing."
Freihofer said that mail or email submissions for casting as extras is an option for those who cannot attend Saturday's open call.
They are asked to include a recent photo; their name; their height and all clothing sizes, including shoes; and all contact information, including mailing and email addresses, as well as phone numbers. They must also list what days they would be available for filming.
Submissions by email are to be sent to AugustExtras@gmail.com. Mail submissions can be sent to the following address: August Extras, c/o Freihofer Casting, 3750 W. Main St., Five Park A, Norman, OK 73072.
Freihofer's casting hotline is 405-310-4391.
Another star joins film's cast
Dermot Mulroney is the latest addition to the growing cast of "August: Osage County," which begins filming next month in Osage and Washington counties.
The casting - reported by show business website Deadline Hollywood on Tuesday - reunites Mulroney with his longtime friend Julia Roberts, who was also his co-star from perhaps his most well-known film, the 1997 box-office hit "My Best Friend's Wedding."
Mulroney will play Steve in the movie based on Tracy Letts' award-winning play about an Oklahoma family gathering during a crisis. Steve is a not-what-he-appears-to-be businessman engaged to Karen (to be played by Juliette Lewis), the youngest daughter of the family matriarch being portrayed by Meryl Streep. Lewis and Roberts play sisters in the movie.
Mulroney is a veteran of dozens of film dramas and comedies. His films include "The Grey," "The Family Stone," "About Schmidt," "Copycat" and "Longtime Companion." He was seen on TV's comedy "New Girl" earlier this year.
