Position update: Punt returner
Penn State transfer Justin Brown continues to earn praise from head coach Bob Stoops.
"He's been in a big-time program for three years playing against big-time players in the Big Ten," Stoops said. "He's ready for this."
Brown was the Nittany Lions' punt returner and is expected to assume the role for the Sooners in 2012.
"Justin has been punt returning for quite a while, and it's something we expect him to be out there for us doing, along with anchoring down the receiving corps," Stoops said following Tuesday's practice. "He's going to bring a lot to this team."
News and notes
Scrimmage recap: Bob Stoops met the media for the first time since Saturday's team scrimmage.
Stoops said the Sooners went through a 102-play workout, with the first and second teams getting between 80-85 snaps. The OU coach said there weren't a lot of penalties and the offense took care of the football.
Stoops said the wide receiver position is beginning to develop, while the secondary played well.
"I was pleased with how (the defensive backs) played," Stoops said. "They were very competitive and played with a good amount of discipline. The first group didn't give up anything big. The 'B' group gave up a play or two and needs to play better, but overall did a good job."
Tuesday's media update was only the fourth through 15 practices from Oklahoma coaches and players.
Creating depth: The wide receivers continue to get a boost from Fresno State transfer Jalen Saunders, who is awaiting a ruling on a possible NCAA waiver that would deem him eligible to play at OU immediately.
Saunders has looked good in practices, Stoops said, and is getting just as much work as the other receivers.
"It's really simple in that when you're out there 2 hours, 15 minutes, to 2 1/2 hours and as fast as we snap it and whatnot, he's in there and the other guys are still getting plenty of snaps coming around, too," Stoops said. "He just fits in really well with them and is doing a nice job."
From the slot: Kenny Stills is getting comfortable at the slot position.
"He looks really good in there," Stoops said. "He's quick and the more time he spends in there, he's really polished up some of those inside moves that Ryan (Broyles) was so good at. I think it's coming together for him."
Offensive line coming together: One week earlier, everyone wondered how the offensive line would jell following the season-ending losses of Ben Habern and Tyler Evans.
Guard Bronson Irwin said all is well.
"It's going really well," Irwin said. "We've got guys that have played multiple positions in games and in practice. It's not the smoothest transition, but we've got guys stepping up and taking on more responsibilities, and getting the job done."
Opponent watch: Kansas
First-year coach Charlie Weis was asked about expectations for the Jayhawks earlier this week.
"I have said before, obviously the goal is to win as many games as you possibly can," Weis said. "That goes without saying. I haven't set a number, at least publicly. I haven't, internally I have one, but I could never tell you. Most importantly I think, as I have said many times before, there are just too many games that the team was out of last year.
"We have to get away from that. We have to get to where people say, 'What happened to those guys? That used to be an easy win.' "
Kansas will travel to Oklahoma on Oct. 20.
