It's a month of back-to-school stories and reminders, from recommendations on what gadgets to take with you to college and how to decorate your dorms to suggestions about where to get your school supplies and how to personalize your school uniforms.

But have you or your children considered what apps you can download to make this school year just a tad easier and more organized?

Here are suggestions for five free apps you or your kids should download before school begins.

1. MyHomework

No more assignment notebook pages torn from being crushed by books in your locker, or forgotten lying on a desk somewhere. Use MyHomework to keep track of your class schedule, assignments and upcoming tests in something that will always be with you - your phone. For $2, you can also make an account online at myhomeworkapp.com, allowing you to sync and access your homework from any computer.

Available for: iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Google Android products

2. Graphing calculators

Taking algebra, geometry, trigonometry or calculus? Apple's Free Graphing Calculator and Google's Algeo Graphing Calculator apps can come in handy. These apps give students the graphing capabilities of those bulky calculators, minus the bulk. The only possible problem is that teachers and professors may not allow phones to be used during tests.

Available for: iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and Google Android products

3. Dictionary.com

There's no reason a person's vocabulary won't grow when their dictionary and thesaurus are just a few keystrokes away. This app means there will be no need to lug that heavy book out every time a word stumps you. Most of the content is accessible even without an Internet connection. More than 2 million definitions, synonyms and antonyms are included.

Available for: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Google Android products

4. Grades 2

When I was in school, I was perpetually trying to figure out exactly how many points I needed to make an A in each class. Grades 2 will do that for you, eliminating the scrap paper and mental effort it takes to do the calculations yourself. The app also helps students calculate their GPA and reminds them of assignment due dates.

Available for: iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

5. School A to Z

For any parent who has ever felt lost when looking at their child's homework, this is the app for you. The app offers help with English, math and technology. It defines terms that are currently common in the classroom to help parents understand what is going on, and it offers graphic illustrations and how-to videos. It also provides inspiration and ideas for projects and assignments.

Available for: iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and Google Android products
