In my opinion, Stanley Crouch's column, "Gabby Douglas, a true American," was a gloss-over of Douglas' unpatriotic act and an insult to the rest of our Olympic athletes. There is little doubt that Douglas, like all Olympic competitors, overcame huge difficulties and enormous personal challenges to become a gold medalist in her sport of gymnastics.
But unlike the other gold medalists of the United States who wrapped themselves in the flag of our country to show pride in our nation, she instead chose to disrespect the symbol of our nation by not saluting the flag during her gold medal ceremony.
I can forgive the naïveté of a 16-year-old believing she will make some kind of a statement, but she should be ashamed of her lack of respect for her flag and fellow countrymen. What I cannot forgive is the media for not calling her out on her disrespect for our nation's flag.
