Anti-fraud conference for seniors is Wednesday

The Oklahoma Insurance Department is hosting an anti-fraud conference for older adults, who are frequently the targets of scammers.

The conference, which is designed to provide seniors with the tools to protect themselves, is 8:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Double Tree Warren Place, 6110 S. Yale Ave.

The conference topics include: Medicare Fraud, Funeral Home Trust Fraud, Contractor Fraud and Investment Fraud.

Those in attendance will learn how to spot, avoid and fight fraud.

"Criminals who go after seniors should beware. It's my mission to protect these important citizens, and I will go after anyone who tries to take advantage of them," said Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak. "This conference will teach seniors how to spot a scam and what to do next."

Participants will also attend a "Fraud Fashion Show" that will feature local utility workers wearing their official uniforms. The workers will explain what happens during legitimate home visits so seniors will know what to expect from real workers.

The conference is free for seniors and includes breakfast.

Onsite registration is 8 a.m.

There is a $25 fee for insurance and law enforcement professionals seeking continuing education credit.
