Republican Markwayne Mullin and Democrat Rob Wallace scored double-digit victories in their respective 2nd Congressional District runoff elections on Tuesday, setting up what could be a spirited campaign leading to the Nov. 6 general election.

Mullin defeated state Rep. George Faught, R-Muskogee, 57 percent to 43 percent, and Wallace defeated agri-businessman Wayne Herriman by an almost identical margin.

Both runoff campaigns got a little rough at times, but Mullin, in his first outing as a candidate for public office, said he knew things could get personal.

"When you're in business, you run into situations all the time," he said. "It didn't bother us or set us back any."

Wallace said Herriman's attacks on Wallace's record as a state and federal prosecutor and some failed business ventures backfired.

"It was Washington-style politics at its worst," he said. "He wasn't willing to engage on the issues."

The general election campaign through the far-flung 2nd District could give voters an interesting choice. Mullin and Wallace seem to disagree not so much on the issues as on what the issues actually are.

The big issue, said Mullin, "is still the economy. And moral issues.

"The Democrat Party is pushing a socialist agenda ... that's clearly what the Democratic agenda is about. If you live in Oklahoma, that's not going to work."

Over-regulation is stifling business, said Mullin, who operates a plumbing services company.

Wallace, meanwhile, talks about jobs, protecting water rights and the working class.

"I just know what the voters tell me they want," said Wallace. "People are looking for common sense. I think I can provide that. People in eastern Oklahoma are so tired of labels. They want solutions."

Mullin spent more than $250,000 of his own money and raised an additional $720,000 in winning the GOP nomination. Much of his financial support came from business interests and associates and family members.

Wallace has raised almost $700,000, much of it from organized labor.

Mullin and Wallace seek to replace Democrat Dan Boren, who is not seeking re-election. The 2nd is the only one of the state's five congressional districts generally considered competitive.
