In her Aug. 15 letter, "Obamacare," Shirley Thompson closes with, "I cannot understand why people continue to vote against their best interest and keep voting for their enemy (Republicans)."

I think I know the answer. The Republicans have done the best job of any organization in putting together a coalition of one-issue voters. These are people who will vote for you if you are pro-gun, anti-gay, far-right religious, against poor people, anti-union, racist, etc. They will vote for this one issue even though everything else you stand for is against their own best interest.

Oklahoma is one of the poorest states in the union and yet we insist on populating the state Legislature and the congressional halls with Republicans. The party that worships personal wealth and big business, and the party's nominee for president has selected a vice president who wants to do away with Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

A poor middle-class voter who votes Republican is putting a fox in charge of the henhouse.

Wake up, America!
