The much-anticipated opening of Five Guys Burgers and Fries has been scheduled at 11 a.m. Monday at 9635 Riverside Parkway.

The popular national burger chain, which stretches from Maine to southern California, is located in a former More Than Noodles building.

Five Guys features a smallish menu of four burgers offered large or small, four hot dogs, three sandwiches, two fries, Coca-Cola products and a choice of 15 toppings for the burgers and dogs.

Customers also are treated to a bag of roasted peanuts in the shell.

That's it.

All burgers are cooked well-done, and the fries are cooked in 100 percent peanut oil.

Among its many awards, Five Guys has been voted "Best Burger" the past five years in Washingtonian magazine and No. 1 "Bang for the Buck" in Zagat Survey.

The restaurant was founded in 1986 by Janie and Jerry Murrell, along with their four sons, in Alexandria, Va. Since then a fifth brother has been born.

According to the company's website, Jerry Murrell originally told the four oldest brothers they had a choice to "start a business or go to college."

The brothers selected the business route, and the family came up with the hamburger and fries concept that has remained virtually intact since.

The family opened four additional restaurants of their own before franchising locations beginning in 2003. Today, Five Guys has more than 1,000 locations nationwide.

Five Guys has three restaurants in the Oklahoma City area with one more scheduled to open soon.

Tulsa hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. all week. The phone number is 918-296-5509.
