BROKEN ARROW - Tearris Wallace had 31 carries for 191 yards and Reese Dollins tossed two first-quarter touchdown passes to lift Bentonville (Ark.) past Class 6A No. 2 Broken Arrow 20-10 on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
Broken Arrow's Cameron Wrenn had 23 rushes for 124 yards in a matchup of teams that lost their respective state title games by one point last year.
Bentonville's Dillon Wade kicked two field goals, including the clinching 18-yarder with 1:47 left. Another standout in the battle of the Tigers was Bentonville's Gavin Shadrick, who set up 10 points with a blocked punt and interception. Bentonville (2-0) intercepted three of Coleman Key's passes.
"That was a good football team we played," said Broken Arrow coach Steve Spavital, whose team trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. "We weren't very sharp on offense. The defense did a good job at the end but you can't be slow starters and shoot yourself in the foot all the time."
After a 2:17 lightning delay, the game started at 9:47 p.m. Broken Arrow's Cre Moore returned the opening kickoff 50 yards to the Bentonville 48.
Broken Arrow (1-1) could not take advantage of Moore's return and after an exchange of punts, Garrett Kauffman intercepted a Key pass at the 50. Wallace had carries of 24 and 16 yards to set up Dollins' 10-yard TD pass to Caleb Haney in the left flat for a 7-0 lead.
Shadrick's blocked punt set up Bentonville's next TD that came on Dollins' 24-yard pass to Trey Perkins with 1:56 left in the first quarter.
Broken Arrow missed two scoring chances in the second period. The first threat reached Bentonville's 13 before Key was intercepted in the end zone by Nate Gneiting. Late in the half, Broken Arrow reached the Bentonville 34 before turning the ball over on downs.
Moore began the second half with an interception at Broken Arrow's 36. Four plays later, Wrenn showed power and speed on a 50-yard TD run that cut Bentonville's lead to 14-7.
Wallace had a 22-yard run after a Shadrick interception to set up Wade's 23-yard field goal late in the third period. Broken Arrow cut its deficit to 17-10 on Ross Moore's 28-yard field goal with 6:12 left,
Catches of 36 yards by Wallace and 25 yards by Jackson set up Wade's final field goal just before midnight.
