Man arrested on child abuse charge after stepson hit with belt

A man was arrested Wednesday on accusations that beating his 5-year-old stepson with a belt after he wouldn’t take a nap.
Justin Wayne Watt, 24, was charged Aug. 31 with child abuse by injury, Tulsa County District Court filings show.
Detective Danielle Bishop said a family member sought medical attention and contacted police after the boy came to stay with them and they noticed marks on his back and buttocks.
Police said Watt admitted to “disciplining” the child with a belt after the boy refused to take a nap.
The Department of Human Services was called, and the boy was placed in the custody of a family member, Bishop said.
Watt’s children remain in the home. DHS is assisting the family in establishing a treatment plan for the other children.
