BARTLESVILLE - Airplanes of every description, antique and special cars, helicopter and warbird rides, spot landing and short field takeoff contests are among the features at the 56th annual Tulsa Regional Fly-In from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Frank Phillips Field.
Sponsored by Tulsa Experimental Aircraft Association's Antique, Ultrasport and Experimental Chapters 10, the Bartlesville fly-in will begin with a pancake breakfast lasting until 10 a.m.
At 11 a.m., warbird arrivals begin, followed by flybys of a variety of planes, including antiques, biplanes, classics, light sport aircraft, ultralights and experimentals.
"We're expecting up to 100 aircraft, everything from World War II trainers to exotic one-of-a-kind home- or custom-builts," said fly-in spokesman Ross Adkins. "There will be antiques that date to the 1930s and light sport aircraft - something for everybody."
For the first time this year, the Tulsa Regional Fly-In will be a single-day event. Previously, it was held on a Saturday and Sunday.
"We think we can get more people to a one-day event," Adkins said.
New events this year are spot landing and short-field takeoff contests.
"In the spot landings, they will have a charcoal line on the runway and you have to put your wheels on that line on landing," Adkins said. "On the short-field takeoffs, planes will start at the charcoal line and see how quickly they can get off the ground and stay airborne."
Rides will be offered on a Robinson R44 helicopter. Rides also will be available on a Fairchild PT-19, the basic trainer flown by nearly 1 million World War II student pilots, Adkins said.
The gates will open at 8 a.m. for a suggested donation of $7 for adults, $3 for students. Children under 5 will be admitted free. Children under 14 will not be admitted unless accompanied by an adult, officials said.
