Two men are arrested in shooting with assault rifle

Two men were arrested late Friday night on complaints of shooting at an occupied house with a high-powered assault rifle, injuring one person inside.

Deonte Raeshaun Smith, 19, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Friday on five counts of shooting with intent to kill, shooting a firearm from a vehicle, possession of stolen property and possession of marijuana, according to his arrest and booking report.

Jarvis Vedahl Prince, 19, of Broken Arrow was also arrested on complaints of shooting a firearm from a vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana and speeding. He allegedly drove the vehicle.

Tulsa police officers were near the 5000 block of North Peoria Avenue when they heard 10 to 15 shots fired from a high-powered rifle and then saw a vehicle speeding from the 5200 block of North Peoria Avenue. After police pulled the vehicle over in the 5100 block of North Johnstown Avenue, Smith, Prince and a third subject were taken into custody.

Officers found a loaded assault rifle in the backseat and a shell casing in the driver's seat, and officers could smell gunpowder in the car, according to the report. A check on the weapon found it was stolen out of Creek County.

According to the arrest report, Smith admitted to detectives that he shot the assault rifle at a house in the 1300 block of East 51st Street North, which had five people inside at the time of the shooting.

Sgt. Robert Heidlage said one person was shot in the hip and was transported to Hillcrest Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police believe the person who was targeted in the shooting had been in a fight or argument earlier Friday evening at or around the McLain High School football game, Heidlage said.

Smith is being held at the Tulsa County Jail on $401,750 bail. Prince's bail is $26,900.
