Who is going to play Ivy Weston, the middle of three sisters in the "August: Osage County" family?

It's a question that has been out there for some time and gaining frequency in being asked as filming begins Monday on the movie based on Tracy Letts' prize-winning play.

The answer: Julianne Nicholson, who is better known for her TV work in "Boardwalk Empire" and other series than films, will be playing Ivy Weston.

I had to think that an actress had been cast in this critical role, but that the casting had simply not been announced, and that appears to have been the case.

It is Letts himself who provided the casting news that showed up in a New York Daily News blog on Friday afternoon. Letts is preparing to play George in a revival of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" on Broadway.

In speaking to a writer for the New York paper's "Show and Tell" blog, Letts mentioned Nicholson's casting in passing and mentioned that he had been in Oklahoma on Monday for the first table read of his script for "August: Osage County."

"It is the only day in the entire process I'm able to be there," Letts said, adding that the cast "asked lots of smart questions."

As for Nicholson, she played Esther Randolph, the federal prosecutor who attempted to bring down Steve Buscemi's character on election-rigging accusations, in six episodes of "Boardwalk Empire's" second season.

Nicholson also appeared in the 2009 season of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and played a supporting role in the film "Kinsey."
