In her Sept. 4 letter, "Pity," Barbara Clancy writes: "Pity the poor Christians today, they expound their biblical teaching and, pow, they are pelted with verbal rocks by those who hate them." She goes on to say that she is "sure Ken and Gayle Yates are decent folks, but I sincerely doubt that they fear God and would gladly prefer to be called the 'remnant.' "

I know Ken and Gayle Yates. I have never talked to them about their Christianity - I know them as neighbors. I am a Christian and if you want to hate me, then go ahead, but hate drives people to have an early grave.

Christians of today might get pelted with verbal rocks, but that's easier to deal with than the rocks they threw at Stephen in the New Testament. I think the Yateses and most Christians do fear God. Not that they fear he is going to strike them with lightning, but they fear his rejection at death, if you turn away from him.

The time is coming in America that Christians will be hated and put to death like they are in some other countries just for trying to worship God. I don't think the Yateses fear death. I don't fear death, but do I want to rush it? I want to spend as much time as possible with my wife, children and friends. But I'm happy not scared of going to heaven.

So, if Clancy wants, she can pity me too.
