A closer look at the Blazers
Garrick McGee: Tulsa native and former Oklahoma quarterback Garrick McGee is UAB's first-year head coach. Before working for four seasons at Arkansas, he was an assistant at Northwestern (2004-07), UNLV (2003), Toledo (2002), Northern Iowa (1999) and Langston (1996-98). In 2000-01, he was on the Jacksonville Jaguars' staff.
Young program: The UAB football program has been in existence only since 1991. It debuted as an NCAA Division III program.
Excellent kicker: Blazer sophomore Ty Long has a career success rate of 22-of-26 on field goals. This season, he has connected from 54, 47 and 46 yards.
Lacking firepower: Through three games, the UAB offense has scored only four touchdowns.
