A Claremore soldier killed in Afghanistan last week was brought back to the area Thursday ahead of funeral services scheduled for tomorrow.

Services for Jon R. Townsend, 19, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 107 E. Will Rogers Blvd. in Claremore. Burial will follow at Lone Chapel Cemetery in Adair.

Townsend’s body arrived at Tulsa International Airport Thursday morning and was taken to Claremore ahead of a visitation from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Rice Funeral Service, 631 E. Will Rogers Blvd., according to the funeral home.

Townsend, one of four soldiers killed in the Sept. 16 attack in southern Afghanistan, left for the military just days after he graduated from Sequoyah High School in Claremore in 2011.

Townsend was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
