OU Talking Points

Will the offensive tempo ever be full speed, exclusively?

Oklahoma seemed to have had success when the offense used a fast-paced tempo this season. Bob Stoops even admitted as much during Monday's news conference, saying "We have executed better in the hurry-up and we're aware of it." So why does it stop? Stoops said OU's personnel changes and opposing defenses have sometimes dictated pace. Then he also said speed doesn't matter as much as execution. "Like I've said for a number of years, whether you're fast or not ... execution is what allows you to move the ball and to succeed, whether it's fast or slow."

Sterling Shepard's emergence

Shepard looks like he could become a special player at Oklahoma. The true freshman was the lone bright spot in the Kansas State loss, catching seven passes for 108 yards along with his first touchdown. He became only the seventh Sooner freshman to eclipse 100 receiving yards in a game. If he keeps developing, Stoops hinted that Shepard could move into the slot more often and help Stills return to an outside receiver role, where he played before Ryan Broyles' injury last year.

More stops needed behind the line of scrimmage

Oklahoma's once-considered-fierce defense hasn't been able to register many tackles for loss or sacks in its first three games of 2012. OU ranks 105th out of 120 schools in tackles for loss and has six sacks, which ranks 58th. "We've got to do a better job as a D-line. The secondary can't cover all day. We can't give the quarterback six or seven seconds to throw the ball," defensive end David King said.

By the numbers

1: Turnovers produced by Oklahoma defense through three contests.

7: Freshmen in OU history with 100 receiving yards in a game, including Sterling Shepard against Kansas State.

18: Consecutive victories for OU immediately following a regular-season loss, dating back to 2003.

105: Games that have passed since Sooners have lost consecutive games in the same season (final two games of 2003 season).
