CLAREMORE - A ceremony Sunday at the Claremore Veterans of Foreign Wars post will honor families who have lost a loved one who was killed or missing in action or a prisoner of war.
The annual event is more poignant this year with the death of Claremore native Pfc. Jon Townsend, who was killed last week in Afghanistan.
The event is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the Claremore J.R. Hooper Memorial VFW Post, 1717 Dupont St. The event will feature the Claremore High School Navy Junior ROTC, which will hold a flag-folding ceremony.
"This is an opportunity for parents to teach their children about patriotism, and what it means to be willing to defend our nation," Post Commander Bill Richey said.
The event is open to the public.
Funeral services for Townsend are set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Claremore Baptist Church, 107 E. Will Rogers Blvd., with burial to follow at Lone Chapel Cemetery in Adair.
