AEP-PSO is warning customers about attempts to defraud them over the phone, the Tulsa-based electricity utility reported Thursday.

The scammers apparently call customers and represent themselves as employees of American Electric Power-Public Service Company of Oklahoma. The customer is warned that their service will disconnected immediately unless they go buy a pre-paid debit card and call back with the card number, according to the utility.

AEP-PSO urged customers to hang up in the case of such calls. Payments over the phone are allowed only when the customer calls AEP-PSO.

Customers with overdue bills are warned about disconnection on their bill statement, officials of the utility said.

AEP-PSO's customer service number is 888-216-3523.
