A man was shot in the neck Monday evening allegedly by his roommate who was playing with an assault rifle he believed to be unloaded, police said.

Police were called about 6 p.m. to Creekwood Apartments at 81st Street and Memorial Drive in reference to a shooting, police said.

When they arrived, they found a 21-year-old male with a gunshot wound, police said.

“They were playing with the gun, the gun discharged,” Officer Jillian Roberson said. “They thought the gun was unloaded, and he was shot.”

It was initially reported that the victim shot himself, according to previous reports.

The victim was transported to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Police interviewed and released the 19-year-old roommate, Roberson said. The investigation is ongoing, she said.
