Muskogee beat Edison 33-7 to earn its first victory of the season Thursday night at LaFortune Stadium.

It was a must-win for the Roughers (1-4 overall, 1-2 District 6A-2) to maintain hope of qualifying for the playoffs.

"It feels great," Muskogee coach Josh Blankenship said. "You could say it was ugly, but we haven't played pretty all year. We still, believe it or not, have playoff aspirations and to get there we knew we had to win tonight. That 'W' at the end is pretty to me."

The Roughers jumped to a 20-0 lead after one quarter, but four turnovers and 15 penalties prevented Muskogee from establishing offensive rhythm and consistency.

The Muskogee defense, though, had an outstanding performance. It held Edison (1-5, 0-3) to 111 yards of total offense. The Eagles had four possessions begin in Muskogee territory, but could not score on any of them.

The only Edison touchdown came on Jacob Karl's 53-yard interception return in the second quarter.

"The defense was awesome," Blankenship said. "They really showed up when the offense would turn the ball over or do something silly and give (Edison) a short field.

"The defense had some unfortunate situations in their own territory, but they rose to the occasion and I couldn't be more proud of them," he said.

Despite throwing two interceptions, Muskogee quarterback Trevor Jiles had a strong game. He was 16-of-26 passing for 238 yards and one touchdown.

Muskogee spread the wealth in the running game. Junior Mackenzie McCall had 51 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns. Senior Raundell Cooper had 81 yards and a touchdown and junior Samuel Richardson had 87 yards and a touchdown.

It was Edison's fifth straight loss after winning the season opener against Hale 24-13.

Muskogee will have its homecoming game next week against Sapulpa, while Edison plays at Bixby.
