The Vinita offense came into Week 6 averaging just more than 10 points per game and in need of a boost.

On Thursday, quarterback Gage Bertram jump-started the Hornets, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for two more to lead Vinita to a 45-22 District 4A-3 victory over Webster at Marshall Milton Stadium.

"He's a good athlete and we've got kids around him that block and catch the football," said Vinita head coach Duwayne King. "He never quits working hard and he deserves the success he had tonight."

Webster (0-6, 0-3) took an early 6-3 lead on Kortney Smith's 45-yard punt return for a touchdown but Vinita (2-4, 1-2) marched right back down the field and took the lead for good when Bertram ran in for a 22-yard score.

"It's fun when things you work on all week in practice work on game night and that's what happened tonight," said King.

Following a Webster punt, the Hornets kept the momentum on their side when Bertram outran everyone up the middle for an 82-yard score.

The Hornets continued the offensive surge when Zac King hauled in a 49-yard over-the-shoulder catch. Bertram and King capped off the quick drive on a 10-yard touchdown pass to give Vinita a 23-6 halftime lead.

Webster came out strong to start the second half, driving to Vinita's 33-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.

Vinita's first play following the turnover was a 61-yard run by Jake Ornder to set the Hornets up with first-and-goal. Two plays later, Grant Martin scored from one yard out for Vinita. It was the first rushing touchdown of the season for Vinita by someone other than Bertram.

A Warriors fumble on the next play from scrimmage gave Vinita possession on Webster's 17-yard line. Three plays later, Bertram hit King with a 10-yard touchdown pass for a 38-6 lead.

The wheels came off for Webster on the next drive when Vinita's Wyatt Speer intercepted a pass at Webster's 27. Martin promptly found the end zone again for Vinita, this time from 27 yards.
