An alumni event to celebrate 100 scholastic years of Tulsa school Booker T. Washington will be 9 p.m. Friday at the Jazz Depot inside the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, 111 E. First St.
Tickets are $20 at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Deborah Brown Community School.
Former athlete Marcus Peel will be honored at the event. A 1977 senior, Peel averaged 17.6 points and 13 rebounds, leading BTW to a state title. He went on play at the University of Tulsa.
"So many of us credit Marcus with the beginning of the basketball dominance of the late '70s to the current program success," said event coordinator Fred Jones of Executive Event Conceptions.
Performing will be urban adult contemporary band Retro Soul, featuring Tammy Hamilton and Gary Mason Sr. along with bassist Morris Rentie Jr., who graduated from Booker T. in 1982. Mason also produced and performed with an array of stars, including Toni Braxton, Brian McKnight, Boyz II Men and the Gap Band.
Rentie, current musical director for Tito Jackson, said in a press statement, "Whenever we get together like this it's incredible, electrifying and memorable, I'm looking forward to this celebration and giving back to The Deborah Brown School makes it even better."
Alumni DJ Walter Bell also will be in attendance.
The event also will serve as the 30-year class reunion for the class of 1982, the 25-year reunion for the class of 1987 and the "turning 50" birthday party for the classes of 1980-81, Jones said.
National recording artist and 1981 alum Anthony Mason will sing the birthday serenade. Leslie Christopher, class of 1974 Miss Hornet, and Lisa Wright, class of 1982 Miss Hornet, also will appear.
