GLENPOOL - Class 4A No. 7 Oklahoma City Douglass, which scored 131 points in its last three games, struggled mightily to score 14 against unranked Glenpool on Friday.
Those points proved to be enough, however, as the Trojans escaped with a 14-0 District 4A-2 victory at Warrior Field.
Douglass (4-2 overall and 3-0 in district) finally wore down Glenpool's defense with two third-quarter touchdowns. Christopher High scored from 5 yards out, and Chavez Wyatt added another from 9 yards.
High and Wyatt not only provided the scoring, but were game-high runners. Wyatt finished with 113 yards on 14 carries, while High managed 106 yards on 15 tries. That was 219 of the Trojans' 283 yards rushing.
It was a strange game. Douglass moved the ball at will, but could not score until High's touchdown with 8:44 left in the third quarter.
Glenpool (2-4, 1-2) managed 85 yards total offense, but its defense kept it in the game. The Warrior defense was led by junior linebacker Josh Hallemeier.
Hallemeier recovered two fumbles as Douglass was driving for sure-looking, first-half TDs. He suffered what appeared to be a high ankle sprain in the second half, however.
"It was a rush (to get the football)," Hallemeier said. "The play happens (and you react) and get ready for the next one."
Warrior coach Steve Edwards had nothing but praise for the way his team played.
"They have two Division I players and we never quit," Edwards said. "I'm proud of the way we played. We are so young ... but we played better than we did last week."
The Trojans moved the ball well in the first half, but once they got near the end zone, everything fell apart.
Hallemeier's fumble recoveries began at the Warrior 23 with 5:04 left in the first quarter. The second came at the Glenpool 6 with 2:14 left before halftime.
Douglass had another chance to get some points on the scoreboard with two seconds left in the second quarter. But Lorenzo Zuniga's 27-yard field goal attempt was low and tipped by the Warrior defensive line.
The Trojans got that late field goal opportunity when Dior Smiley had a 42-yard punt return with less than a minute left. Glenpool had to punt when it failed to advance outside the shadow of the end zone.
