Daniel Francis Smith was born August 25, 1930 to John and Margaret Smith in Lake City, IL. He passed from this life on October 6, 2012 at the age of 82. Born the youngest of six boys on the family farm, Dan was a born leader, serving as President of his senior class and the FFA in Lovington, IL. He attended Millikin University in Decatur, IL, before joining the U.S. Army to fight in the Korean War. Upon return, he finished his degree at Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, MO. After teaching in Urbana, IL, Dan found his forte´ in sales, landing a job at Caterpillar Inc. in Decatur. There, Dan met the love of his life, Eleanor Ann “Nan” Staniswesky. Dan and Nan were married on February 8, 1958 in Pana, IL, and celebrated 54 years of marriage. After starting a family in Lincoln, IL and working in sales for Lincoln Office Supply, Dan moved his family to Tulsa in 1970 to serve as Vice President of Scott- Rice, later becoming President and assuming ownership. He readily acknowledged that his life’s successful journey could not have been accomplished without the loving partnership and support of his wife, Nan. Upon retirement, Dan served on numerous Boards and continued playing his life- long passion—golf. Dan faithfully held a tee time with his wife and friends at Southern Hills Country Club, where he was an active member and volunteered at several PGA events. He now joins his faithful foursome—Ed, Murray & Paul—on the verdant greens above. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John, Leonard, Charles, Thomas and twin Donald, all of IL. Dan is survived by his wife, Nan, of the home; son, Martin Smith and his wife Britta, grandsons Nathan and Jeremy of Marietta, GA; daughter, Maribeth Spanier and granddaughter Maggie of Tulsa; and, daughter, Sutton Murray and her husband Glenn, grandchildren Quinnlan, Gannon, and Styrling of Tulsa. The family will receive friends for visitation at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel on Mon., Oct. 8th, at 5-7 pm, followed by the Holy Rosary. Funeral mass will be held at the Church of St. Mary on Tues., Oct. 9th at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., Neighbor for Neighbor, or Catholic Charities.
