Don't be afraid to admit that you have no idea what to wear to the Halloween party you've been invited to - stop in at Spot Lite Magic & Costumes, and owner Sacheen Platten will guide you through the process.
"I find out what kind of event they are needing a costume for. I ask them what kind of budget they are wanting to stay within," said Platten, who with her husband has operated the store at 4946 E. 21st St. since 1998, along with a downtown Claremore location.
It's important to keep in mind whether a party is inside or outside, she said. Is it a house party, or is it a large-scale event? Or is it a mom wanting to dress up to trick-or-treat with the kids?
"Based on their answers, I try to help them pick a costume that will not only look great on them but will be comfortable," Platten said. "For example, a mom would most likely not wear the same costume to trick-or-treat that she would wear out with her friends. Or say that you are going to a dinner costume party - a costume with a mask is probably not best."
That makes sense. So did Platten's answers when we posed a few questions to her.
What are you ...
... stocking up on this year for your customers?
Morph Suits were new last year (bodysuits in a kind of Spandex type material, in multiple colors as well as tuxedo suits, a skeleton, a Santa, more new colors) and with more styles now we expect them to be an even bigger seller this year. Movies always play a big part in what will be hot; Batman will be big this year, followed closely by Spider-Man.
... stocked up on because they are always big sellers?
Superheroes are always big for us. Scary movie characters like Jason, Freddy, Michael Myers, and "Scream." We sell lots of wigs all year.
... surprised has changed for the public when it comes to dressing up for Halloween?
Halloween has definitely changed into an adult holiday since we started in this business. Adult sales account for 75 percent of our business.
... personally a fan of wearing if you're going to a Halloween party?
People always say to me, "You must have the best costume every year," but my husband and I very rarely pick out our costumes early. We usually wait to see what is left in our store and pick our costume from what is left. It has to be comfortable and easy to wear because by Oct. 31 I am worn out and want to just be able to get dressed and go.
... treating yourself to when you dine out in Tulsa?
Our family likes to eat Chinese and sushi at various places across town. We love Jim's Coney Island for coneys and Greek food and McGill's on 19 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
... doing for fun when you go out?
We like to go to the movies and go out to dinner, and we like to take our son to play laser tag or go to sporting events. My husband and I like to meet friends at the Hard Rock.
... reading right now?
I like to read Janet Evanovich, and then any mystery novel.
... most fond of as a Halloween treat, ever since you were a kid?
Anything with chocolate in it!
