Broken Arrow starts fast in rout over Putnam City

OKLAHOMA CITY - Traveling down the Turner Turnpike to face Putnam City, fifth-ranked Broken Arrow was hoping for a quick start to erase the frustration of last week's loss to Jenks.
Quarterback Coleman Key made sure the Tigers got their wish.
He threw for touchdowns on Broken Arrow's first two possessions and finished with 305 yards and four scores through the air as the fifth-ranked Tigers dismantled Putnam City 42-0 in a District 6A-2 game on Friday night at Putnam City Stadium.
Key entered the game with just 686 yards and five touchdowns on the season. The junior had a career-best night against the Pirates (4-3, 2-2), hitting 20-of-27 passes.
"It felt really good to be able to go out and throw the ball and have an air raid against them," Key said. "We didn't know what kind of defense they were going to run against us and they gave us the chance to throw tonight."
Broken Arrow (4-3, 3-1) had 306 yards of offense in the first half in building a 28-0 lead at intermission. The Tigers' first three drives resulted in touchdowns in the game's first nine minutes.
"After our tough loss last week, that was very important for us to come out and do well early," said Broken Arrow head coach Steve Spavital. "I thought our kids really responded well and got us off to a fast start."
Key set the tone for Broken Arrow on the game's first play, hitting Jaylon Calhoun for 14 yards and a first down. Key hit four of five passes on the drive, including an 8-yard strike to Alex Lewis for a quick 7-0 lead.
On the next possession Key found Calhoun over the middle for a 53-yard scoring strike and a 14-0 lead.
