CLAREMORE - With top receiver Caleb Webster out with an injury, the Claremore Zebras were looking for someone to step up and fill the void.
Hunter Garroutte did.
The junior hauled in a touchdown pass and an interception to go along with a handful of pass breakups as the Zebras defeated Pryor 31-7 on Friday night at Lantow Field in Claremore.
"Hunter had the game of his life tonight," said Claremore coach Rob Gilbreath.
Garroutte finished with three catches for 54 yards and also had three pass breakups and an interception.
"I knew I had to step up and fill his (Webster's) shoes," said Garroutte.
Claremore (6-1, 3-1 in district 5A-4) took a 14-7 lead with 46 seconds left in the first half when Matt Whatley lofted a 21-yard pass to Garroutte, who made a diving catch in the end zone.
The Zebras doubled their lead late in the third quarter when Whatley threw his second touchdown pass of the night, this time to fullback James Chester.
Claremore took a commanding 28-7 just before time expired in the third when Derek Reliford plowed in from two yards out. Reliford's 26-yard run two plays earlier set the Zebras up inside Pryor's five.
Pryor (3-4, 2-2) threatened to take an early lead after a fake punt pass to Carson Smallwood went for more than 50 yards to give the Tigers possession inside the Zebras' 30. Claremore linebacker Bear Hope intercepted a pass inside his own 10 to put an end to the drive.
Claremore took a 7-0 lead in the second when Brycen Short found the end zone from seven yards out.
Pryor tied the game midway through the second when Smallwood turned in a 34-yard scoring run. Smallwood, who entered the game with more than 1,000 rushing yards on the season, missed most of the second half after hobbling off the field in the third.
