OKLAHOMA CITY - The only thing that could slow Oologah during the Class 4A fast-pitch state softball tournament was a rain storm that rushed through Hall of Fame Stadium Saturday.
The Mustangs led Piedmont 3-0 after 3 1/2 innings when rain and lightning forced postponement of not only the 4A final, but 5A and 6A as well.
The championships will resume at 2 p.m. Monday with Oologah batting in the bottom of the fourth. The 5A title game between Grove and Chickasha is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The 6A championship between Moore and Edmond North is set for 7 p.m.
"The break might be good," Oologah coach Andrea Vaughan said. "Three straight days of competition can take a toll."
The Mustangs looked sharp before the storm. Junior pitcher Hunter Jeffs had six strikeouts and virtually silenced the potent bats of Piedmont.
Oologah tallied three runs in the first inning. Alex Edinger led off the first with a triple down the left-field line. Jayci Wang walked and Taylor McElhaney was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Piedmont starting pitcher Kassidy Scott was pulled for Jamie Lowrie after the hit batsman. Lowrie's first batter to face was Jeffs, who laced a bases-clearing double to right-center field for a 3-0 lead.
Lowrie settled down after that and the game became a defensive struggle.
"We feel confident," Vaughan added. "Piedmont is a great team. They can break it open at any time."
Piedmont came into the game averaging 14.5 runs a contest at the state tournament. Jeffs' pitching slowed the powerful offense almost to a standstill.
"I feel confident in our pitching and defense," Vaughan said.
Vaughan will find out on Monday if the postponement was good or bad for either team.
